COURSE DESCRIPTION:  MATH 0530 Learning Support for MATH 1530  2 credit hours: 
This course will allow students to develop and show mastery of the outcomes to support college level mathematics which include: real number sense and operations, solve equations, analyze graphs, modeling and critical thinking, and operations with algebraic expressions. The student must show competency in at least three of five Learning Support Mathematics outcomes to earn a passing grade in this course. This course is institutional credit only. 

Any student enrolled in this course will be required to take MATH 1530 (Elementary Statistics) as a co-requisite. Exception:  if a degree/certificate program does not require any college-level MATH course, but does require completion of Learning Support Mathematics, then MATH 0530 may be taken as a stand-alone course. Students meeting these criteria must seek permission of instructor.

Competency 1 - Real Number Sense and Operations

  Apply the order of operations to evaluate expressions

  Perform operations with rational numbers

  Determine the other equivalent forms of the number when given a fraction, decimal number, or percent

  Identify and calculate with irrational numbers

  Recognize and apply magnitude (absolute value) and ordering of real number

  Solve real-world application problems

Competency 2 - Operations with Algebraic Expressions (including polynomials)

  Identify and simplify like terms

  Evaluate algebraic expressions when given values for the variables

  Create a table of values from an expression

  Evaluate expressions involving powers and roots

  Use the distributive law to write equivalent expression

  Add, subtract and multiply polynomials

  Factor a polynomial using GCF only

  Simplify an expression involving integer exponents using the rules for exponents

  Solve real-world application problems

Competency 3 - Analyze Graphs (emphasis on linear functions and graphs, including inequalities)

  Create a table of values and a graph for a given relations

  Identify and interpret rate of change

  Use and interpret function notation particularly as it relates to graphic and tabular data

  Analyze the graph of a linear function identifying the x-intercepts, y-intercepts, and slope

  Graph a linear equation in two variables using ordered pairs, using the x-intercept and the y- intercept, and using the slope and the y-intercept

  Write a linear equation in two variables when given information about their graphs

  Graph linear inequalities in two variables

  Solve systems of equations using graphing, substitution and elimination methods

  Solve real-world application problems.

Competency 4 - Solve Equations (emphasis on linear equations/inequalities)

  Solve a linear equation in one variable using multiple approaches - numerical, graphical, and symbolic

  Solve a linear inequality in one variable and graph the solutions

  Solve formulas and literal equations for a specified variable

  Solve proportions that simplify to linear expressions

  Solve real-world application problems

Competency 5 - Modeling and Critical Thinking

  Basic statistics: mean, median, mode

  Basic probability

  Solve real-world application problems

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Attendance:
  Regular class attendance is required and is necessary for success in any mathematics course.  Students are expected to attend class and to be on time for each class meeting. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of the period. Attendance for classes that meet only once per week will be taken both at the beginning of class and immediately after the break. Please take the attendance policy seriously. If you are absent, then expect an email from your instructor encouraging you to return to class. It is never too late to come back to class under any circumstance!
2. Instructor Absence:  In the rare case that the instructor should be absent, class should continue utilizing the instructional aide as the primary instructor. If no instructor is available to manage the class, then every effort will be made to contact enrolled students by email and/or phone.
3. Inclement Weather:
 
In case of inclement weather, please check the Chargernet webpage http://chargernet.columbiastate.edu or call the Columbia State closing line at (931) 540-2515. Follow instructions given for late openings and how this may affect class times. Students are individually responsible for decisions regarding travel safety.
4. Cell phones and all other electronic equipment: will be turned off and stored during class time.  Texting will not be tolerated.  If the instructor finds that a student is texting during class time, then the student will be directed to leave the class and that student will be counted as absent for the entire day. The student will be directed to leave the classroom for Internet surfing. It is important to remain focused and work on mathematics while in the classroom.
5. Assignments: All assignments and tests will be completed on-line utilizing the MyMathLabsPlus website.  Students are responsible for completing all assignments prior to testing.  The expectation for this course is that students will need to work a minimum of 3-6 hours outside of class each week in order to progress through the program at the expected rate.  Students with limited Internet access may print homework and attempt the problems offline; however, once the homework is completed it must be entered online so that the program grades the assignment.
6. Notebook:  Students should keep a notebook that includes notes from videos/textbook, completed homework problems, and/or completed work from the study plan. These notes are essential so that the instructor, aide and/or tutor may better assist the student with difficulties they encounter with the course objectives.

Testing:  Cell phones may not be used as calculators, no exceptions. A calculator with graphing capabilities will not be allowed in the classroom nor on any pre-test or post-test for any Competency. Scratch paper will not be allowed during tests unless given by the instructor.
8. DeadlinesAn ideal deadline will be established within the online program for each competency. Bonus points will be awarded to the passing grades of students who meet the established deadline.  Students who miss deadlines will be encouraged to meet with a tutor and/or attend a mini-lecture.
9. Two Attempt Policy:  A student must put forth his/her best efforts to complete the course within the initial semester enrolled. Financial aid will not pay for any attempt in excess of two attempts.  An attempt is defined to be enrollment in a course beyond the first 14-day period within a given semester.
10. Student Identification:  Columbia State students are expected to be able to produce a valid student ID upon request by faculty/staff/employees.

Student Conduct:  A student may be directed to leave the classroom if their conduct is not conducive to the overall progress of the class.  Cheating and other forms of academic misconduct, including plagiarism, are prohibited.  The instructor has the authority to assign a zero for the exercise or examination or to assign an F in the course in the case of academic misconduct.  Please refer to the Columbia State student handbook.
12. Instructional Recording Recording of learning activities is allowed only with faculty permission and is to be used for educational purposes by individual students. When recording is permitted, all students should be aware that voices/images may be captured during the process. No portion of instructional recordings may be reproduced or published by students.
13. Internet/Social Media Use:  Program/institutional expectations for professionalism, confidentiality, and mutual respect extend to Internet and social networking settings. Discipline and grade consequences may be applicable to inappropriate virtual behavior.
14. We Care About Your Success! Your instructor will be using C-STAR to help you succeed in this course. The instructor may set alerts, flags, referrals, or kudos to let you know about your course grades or academic performance. You will need to go to ChargerNet and select the C-Star icon to access your C-Star account. Also, you may receive emails from C-Star regarding your course grades or academic performance. Please pay attention to these emails, flags, and alerts and consider taking the recommended actions. They are sent to help you be successful! In addition, your instructor may: (1) request that you schedule an appointment by going to C-Star, or (2) recommend that you contact a specific campus resource, such as tutoring or counseling. You may also be contacted directly by one of these services.
15. Students with Disabilities: In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, students are encouraged to register with the counseling/disability services office for possible assistance with accommodations. It is the students responsibility to voluntarily and confidentially provide appropriate documentation regarding the nature and extent of a disability. Students requesting special accommodation are (strongly) encouraged to contact the counseling/disability services office at the beginning of the semester.
16. Columbia State Emergency Procedures are posted in each classroom.  In emergency situations follow instructions provided by faculty.  Do not stop to collect belongings if told to evacuate the building or classroom.  Should the building be evacuated, proceed immediately to the designated area. Faculty are responsible for checking attendance following an evacuation to determine that all students are accounted for.
17. TBR GUIDELINE P-080 Discrimination and Harassment Complaint and Investigation Procedure:  This Tennessee Board of Regents guideline provides for investigation and resolution of complaints of discrimination or harassment on the basis of race, color, religion, creed, ethnic or national origin, gender identity/expression, disability, age, status as a covered veteran, genetic information and any other category protected by federal or state civil rights law.  Any student or employee who believes s/he has been subjected to, or is aware of, discrimination or harassment, should use the procedure for reporting and resolution of discrimination or harassment complaints. Students and employees are required to be knowledgeable of policies and guidelines, report suspected violations to the Director of Human Resources, and cooperate with investigations.  Employees or students found to have violated this Guideline are subject to disciplinary action including dismissal, termination, or other appropriate sanction.  A link to this guideline and a complaint form is on Charger Net(myCN).
18. Visitors are not permitted to attend any class meeting:  This includes children, spouses, friends, students or any other person not registered for this course.

Grading:

The taking of all pretests and posttests is required. Note: The order of completion for the competencies is (1) Competency 1, (2) Competency 4, (3) Competency 3, (4) Competency 2, and (5) Competency 5.  Assignments must be completed as prescribed by individual assessment of skills before a posttest will be allowed. A final grade will be calculated based on attendance/progress and posttest grades. In order to pass the course, the student must successfully complete Competencies 1, 4, and 3. If any student is not successful in completing the required competencies and therefore must enroll in the course for a second attempt, then that student will begin with the last unsuccessful competency.

If the student is taking this course as a co-req, then they are encouraged to also finish Competencies 2 and 5. If a degree/certificate program does not require any college-level MATH course (Nursing and Vet Tech), but does require completion of Learning Support Mathematics, then it will be necessary for those students to finish all 5 competencies. If the student who is not co-req is successful in completing 3 competencies, but does not finish the five competencies, then he/she must re-enroll in this course to finish the remaining competencies.

Any student who stops attending class before passing all course requirements will receive a grade of FA unless official withdrawal procedures are followed prior to Wednesday, November, 4.

Grades will be issued based on attendance and posttests as follows:

1. Attendance/Progress (10% of grade):  Students will be given points for daily attendance. Students must be on-time to receive the full attendance points. A tardy will result in a reduction of daily attendance points. An absence will result in no points being awarded for that day.
2. Posttests (90% of grade):  Any pretest grade greater than or equal to 75% may be substituted for the posttest score. The student would then progress to the next module. A minimum grade of 75% on the posttest will be considered mastery. If the student does not meet this requirement, then the students must repeat the competency with individually prescribed assignments before the student will be allowed to retest the posttest.

Average of grades is at least 90% = A
Average of grades is at least 80% but less than 90% = B
Average of grades is at least 70% but less than 80% = C
Failure to complete a minimum of three modules successfully = F

A grade of FA will be used to designate an unofficial withdrawal for those students who stopped attending and did not complete the course.
