COURSE DESCRIPTION: MATH 0530 Learning Support for MATH 1530 – 2
This course will allow students to develop and show mastery of the outcomes
to support college level mathematics which include: real number sense and
operations, solve equations, analyze graphs, modeling and critical thinking,
and operations with algebraic expressions. The student must show competency
in at least three of five Learning Support Mathematics outcomes to earn a
passing grade in this course. This course is institutional credit only.
Any student enrolled in this course will be required to take MATH 1530
(Elementary Statistics) as a co-requisite. Exception: if a
degree/certificate program does not require any college-level MATH course,
but does require completion of Learning Support Mathematics, then MATH 0530
may be taken as a stand-alone course. Students meeting these criteria must
seek permission of instructor.

Regular class attendance is required and is necessary for success in any
mathematics course. Students are expected to attend class and to be on time
for each class meeting. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of the
period. Attendance for classes that meet only once per week will be taken
both at the beginning of class and immediately after the break.
Please take the attendance policy seriously. If you are absent, then expect
an email from your instructor encouraging you to return to class. It is
never too late to come back to class under any circumstance!
2. Instructor Absence:
In the rare case that the instructor should be absent, class should continue
utilizing the instructional aide as the primary instructor. If no instructor
is available to manage the class, then every effort will be made to contact
enrolled students by email and/or phone.

class time. Texting will not be tolerated. If the instructor finds that a
student is texting during class time, then the student will be directed to

“surfing.” It is important to remain focused and work on mathematics while
in the classroom.
5. Assignments: All assignments and tests will be
completed on-line utilizing the MyMathLabsPlus website. Students are
responsible for completing all assignments prior to testing. The
expectation for this course is that students will need to work a minimum of
3-6 hours outside of class each week in order to progress through the
program at the expected rate. Students with limited Internet access may
print homework and attempt the problems offline; however, once the homework
is completed it must be entered online so that the program grades the
6. Notebook: Students should keep a notebook that
includes notes from videos/textbook, completed homework problems, and/or
completed work from the study plan. These notes are essential so that the
instructor, aide and/or tutor may better assist the student with
difficulties they encounter with the course objectives.
7. Testing: Cell phones may not be used as calculators,
no exceptions. A calculator with graphing capabilities will not be
allowed in the classroom nor on any pre-test or post-test for any

8. Deadlines: An ideal deadline will be established within
the online program for each competency. Bonus points will be awarded to the
passing grades of students who meet the established deadline. Students who
miss deadlines will be encouraged to meet with a tutor and/or attend a
9. Two Attempt Policy: A student must put forth
his/her best efforts to complete the course within the initial semester
enrolled. Financial aid will not pay for any attempt in excess of two
attempts. An attempt is defined to be enrollment in a course beyond the
first 14-day period within a given semester.
10. Student Identification:
Columbia State students are expected to be able to produce a valid student
ID upon request by faculty/staff/employees.
Student Conduct: A student may be directed to leave the
classroom if their conduct is not conducive to the overall progress of the
class. Cheating and other forms of academic misconduct, including
plagiarism, are prohibited. The instructor has the authority to assign a
zero for the exercise or examination or to assign an F in the course in the
case of academic misconduct. Please refer to the Columbia State student
Recording of learning activities is allowed only with faculty permission and
is to be used for educational purposes by individual students. When
recording is permitted, all students should be aware that voices/images may

classroom. In emergency situations follow instructions provided by
faculty. Do not stop to collect belongings if told to evacuate the building
or classroom. Should the building be evacuated, proceed immediately to the
designated area. Faculty are responsible for checking attendance following
an evacuation to determine that all students are accounted for.

Students and employees are required to be knowledgeable of policies and
guidelines, report suspected violations to the Director of Human Resources,
and cooperate with investigations. Employees or students found to have
violated this Guideline are subject to disciplinary action including
dismissal, termination, or other appropriate sanction. A link to this

Visitors are not permitted to attend any class meeting: This
includes children, spouses, friends, students or any other person not
registered for this course.
The taking of all pretests and posttests is required. Note: The
order of completion for the competencies is (1) Competency 1, (2) Competency
4, (3) Competency 3, (4) Competency 2, and (5) Competency 5.
Assignments must be completed as prescribed by individual assessment of
skills before a posttest will be allowed. A final grade will be calculated
based on attendance/progress and posttest grades. In order to pass the
course, the student must successfully complete Competencies 1, 4, and 3.
If any student is not successful in completing the required competencies
and therefore must enroll in the course for a second attempt, then that
student will begin with the last unsuccessful competency.

finish Competencies 2 and 5. If a degree/certificate program does not
require any college-level MATH course (Nursing and Vet Tech), but does
require completion of Learning Support Mathematics, then it will be
necessary for those students to finish all 5 competencies.
If the student who is not co-req is successful in completing 3 competencies,
but does not finish the five competencies, then he/she must re-enroll in
this course to finish the remaining competencies.
Any student who stops attending class before passing all course requirements
will receive a grade of “FA” unless official withdrawal procedures are
followed prior to Wednesday, November, 4.
Grades will be issued based on attendance and posttests as follows:
1. Attendance/Progress (10% of grade): Students will be given points
for daily attendance. Students must be on-time to receive the full
attendance points. A tardy will result in a reduction of daily attendance
points. An absence will result in no points being awarded for that day.
2. Posttests (90% of grade): Any pretest grade greater than or equal
to 75% may be substituted for the posttest score. The student would
then progress to the next module. A minimum grade of 75% on the posttest
will be considered mastery. If the student does not meet this requirement,
then the students must repeat the competency with individually prescribed
assignments before the student will be allowed to retest the posttest.
Average of grades is at least 90% = A
Average of grades is at least 80% but less than 90% = B
Average of grades is at least 70% but less than 80% = C
Failure to complete a minimum of three modules successfully = F
A grade of FA will be used to designate an unofficial withdrawal for
those students who stopped attending and did not complete the course.
